    Frequently Asked Questions

    Musical Work and Creation

    Musical Work

A musical work is an original musical composition created by one or several composers, which includes the musical score (sheet music) that describes the melody, harmony, rhythm, and other musical elements that make up the song. A musical work is usually copyrighted and can be performed and recorded by different artists over time.

    Music Recording

Recording music, on the other hand, is the process of capturing the performance of a musical work on a physical or digital medium. A recording can include the performance of a single person - such as a soloist - or of a group of musicians - such as a band or orchestra. Recordings can be made in a recording studio or at a live performance. The key difference between a musical work and a musical recording is that the former refers to the original composition, while the latter is a physical or digital representation of the interpretation of that composition. In other words, the musical work is the original "recipe" of a song, while the musical recording is a "version" that is captured at a given moment by one or more musicians.

A single work can generate many recordings.

Cedro Rosa registers, protects, and distributes both works and recordings, and generates international codes for both so their use can generate royalties for those who produced them. On the other end, the professional music market will be reassured that they are using certified and legal material.

What are certified works and recordings?

Every work must have an international code called ISWC. Likewise, every recording must have an international ISRC code. These codes include data about the authors, their publishers, and collective copyright associations, so that for every use - be it public or private - the copyright holders can be identified and entitled to royalties. ISWC - International Standard Musical Word Code (for works) ISRC - International Standard Recording Code (for recordings)

In addition to certifying works and recordings, Cedro Rosa also distributes them to streaming platforms, radio, television and film production companies.

Yes, recordings intended for distribution must be in good technical condition for recording, mixing and mastering. Cedro Rosa takes care of everything needed to distribute recordings to the market, making sure that royalties are paid to their respective copyright holders.

Do social networks like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube also pay copyright fees?

Yes, as long as the works and recordings are certified.

How do I know if my work is being played somewhere?

Cedro Rosa is associated with collective associations in Brazil and abroad that generate international certification codes and identify the use of works and recordings managed by Cedro Rosa Digital.

Is Cedro Rosa Digital like Spotify?

No, Cedro Rosa CERTIFIES works and recordings for the entire market; as such, we do not compete with streaming companies or record labels. In fact, we have several partnerships that allow these companies to use works officially and to know who the copyright holders are, thus improving security.

What are TAGs and what are they used for?

TAGs are keywords meant for online search engines. In the case of music managed by Cedro Rosa, these TAGS help people find our music by means of specific thematic searches. Examples: songs about the sea, trees, birds, etc.. Using more tags increases the likelihood that songs will be found and shared.

How much does it cost to use the Cedro Rosa Digital platform?

You can use and browse Cedro Rosa Digital free of charge. Any person or company can browse, search and listen to music for free. The objective of Cedro Rosa is to promote certified music, connecting music makers to the music and entertainment industry for commercial use of their works.

    For music creators

I am a singer / composer - how much will it cost to have my works and recordings represented by Cedro Rosa?

There is no cost, but a publishing contract is necessary for musical works and a phonographic representation contract is required for recordings. Cedro Rosa represents works and artists from all over the world, so a contract must be signed between the parties. This provides legal guarantees for the whole market and allows Cedro Rosa to create international certification codes that enable all copyright holders to be paid.

Will all the music and recordings I send to Cedro Rosa be automatically certified or protected? How should I proceed?

In the case of both musical and recording works, the authors of the music must sign and post publishing contracts in their Cedro Rosa profile. There is no cost. Cedro Rosa will be paid for administering the works, as per the contract. Songs are certified for the international market in 5 working days.

How will Cedro Rosa Digital generate earnings for my musical works and recordings?

First and foremost, by generating worldwide certification for works and recordings. Without this your work is not copyrightable. Next, there are several ways to generate earnings. Some of them are: public broadcast in radio, TV, cinema, videos, social media such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, etc.  Your works are also made available on the Cedro Rosa website for download as soundtracks for various purposes. Recordings are automatically distributed to streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc. All this benefits everyone involved in the works and recordings managed by Cedro Rosa Digital.

I have music partners, do they all need to sign?

Yes. Ideally each person would create their own profile and generate and sign contracts, because that is the only way Cedro Rosa can manage 100% of the work and automatically license its use worldwide.

If I sign a contract with Cedro Rosa do I lose the right to use my songs?

Absolutely not! You will only be transferring the management of international copyrights; ownership remains with the authors. In fact, their names and pseudonyms are mentioned in all use types.

    How will I receive royalties?

By means of the bank information you provide in your profile.

Can I be associated with Cedro Rosa and to a Copyright Collective Association in my country?

Yes, you can and should, as Cedro Rosa certifies works and recordings and takes care of primary uses, such as permission for recordings and synchronizations on discs, and soundtracks of various kinds, in addition to use in games, advertising, etc.. Public use, however - i.e., the exhibition of such recordings and their use in concerts, radio, tv, shows, etc. -, is supervised by collective associations all over the world. The certification enabled by Cedro Rosa is what makes this kind international surveillance possible. Cedro Rosa is always ready to help composers and artists register with collective copyright associations around the world.
